Media: DHL logistics centre sealed off after suspicious substance found

Emergency services in Germany have removed a suspicious substance from a DHL logistics centre in Leizen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, amid a suspected mercury incident, according to local police.

The substance is being analysed after samples of the potentially hazardous material were sent to a laboratory in Hamburg for examination. Authorities said reliable results could take up to two days, while police and firefighters have been working at the DHL facility, according to DPA, as cited by Russian media.

The incident came to light after a 50-year-old DHL employee reported feeling unwell and experiencing symptoms resembling mercury poisoning. According to her account, she had delivered packages on September 18 and came into contact with a liquid during the deliveries. After developing physical complaints, she contacted police on September 22 and was subsequently placed under medical care.

The DHL facility remains closed to staff until further notice. Police and firefighters have also cordoned off the woman’s private residence in Röbel as part of the ongoing operation.
