Media: Egypt in consultation with Arab League over hosting of emergency summit on Gaza

08 February 2025 17:21

Egypt has increased its discussions with Arab nations regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip and is currently in consultations to host an “emergency summit” in Cairo.

This was reported by the Asharq Al-Awsat network citing undisclosed diplomatic sources, who told the publication that they consider this an “important” development to align Arab positions and create alternative strategies to confront the “displacement plan.”

A source told the publication that “consultations are currently underway with member states of the Arab League to hold an emergency summit in Cairo, which aims to coordinate efforts against the plan to displace Palestinians, as well as discuss rebuilding Gaza.” The source also confirmed that “coordination with Arab states is ongoing to set a date for the summit.”

In a related announcement, Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs released an official statement on on February 7, noting that it is “conducting intensive contacts to coordinate Arab positions and consult on developments in the Palestinian issue, as well as the dire situation in Gaza and the West Bank.”

According to the statement, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati has recently been in close, under the direction of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, with several Arab foreign ministers, including those from Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain (which is currently heading the Arab Summit), Jordan, Iraq, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Sudan.

As noted by Caliber.Az, parties involved in the Israel-Hamas conflict are meeting in Doha this weekend to discuss the next steps of the ceasefire agreement and the technical details of transitioning into its second phase, set to begin in the coming weeks.
