Media: Five high-profile ISIS suspects captured in Iraq's Kurdistan Region
The General Directorate of Operations of the Asayish in Iraq's Kurdistan Region has confirmed the arrest of five ISIS militants following a series of security operations conducted on the outskirts of Al-Sulaymaniyah province.
The operations, which took place between January 19 and 23, 2025, were carried out in coordination with the Iraqi National Security Agency and followed precise intelligence gathered by security forces, Caliber.Az reports per Shafaq News.
In an official statement, the Asayish revealed that the detainees, all of whom were listed on Iraq's most-wanted list, had received both military and religious training within ISIS. The individuals had reportedly relocated to the outskirts of Al-Sulaymaniyah to avoid capture.
“The operations were based on accurate intelligence and a directive from the Asayish investigation judge," said an Asayish spokesperson.
“We are committed to dismantling terrorist networks and ensuring the security and stability of the region."
The suspects have been handed over to the appropriate legal authorities for further investigation, under Article 4 of the Anti-Terrorism Law.
The Asayish reiterated its determination to continue its fight against terrorism. “Security efforts are ongoing, and we will continue to cooperate closely with federal security agencies to thwart any terrorist threats to our region,” the statement concluded.
