Media: Germany may sell tanks intended for Ukraine
Germany is considering selling Leopard 2A6 tanks and Marder 1A5 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to Brazil, which were previously offered to Ukraine but reportedly declined, according to the Ukrainian Telegram channel Politika Strany.
According to the channel, the deal could involve 65 tanks and 78 IFVs, all refurbished and upgraded by the German defence company KNDS. There has been no official confirmation that Ukraine rejected such a large quantity of equipment.
At its peak, the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) operated 81 Leopard 2 tanks. Some of these have been damaged or destroyed, with visual evidence suggesting losses of at least 42 tanks.
Ukraine received approximately 81-100 Leopard 2 tanks from Western allies (primarily 2A4 and 2A6 variants), peaking in 2023-2024. Germany directly supplied 18 Leopard 2A6s, with others from Poland, Norway, Spain, and Portugal.
