Media: Italy faces potential gas shortfall within month if supplies halt

08 April 2026 13:36

Italy could exhaust its natural gas reserves within a month if external supplies are disrupted, according to a report by Corriere della Sera, which cites a government review of emergency measures for the national energy system.

The assessment was discussed at a recent meeting of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, where officials examined strategies to curb consumption in the event of a supply crisis. Proposed measures include extending remote working arrangements, reducing air conditioning use, and limiting car usage to conserve energy.

Current gas storage levels are reported to be at approximately 44%, with replenishment efforts still ongoing. The relatively low reserves have raised concerns about the country’s preparedness for a sudden interruption in imports.

Over the weekend, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni traveled to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar in an effort to strengthen Italy’s energy security through closer ties with major gas-producing nations. However, opposition figures have criticised the trip, arguing that these countries may not provide sufficiently stable or long-term supply solutions.

Analysts also point to broader geopolitical factors affecting Europe’s energy outlook, including increased pressure by the United States on Iran, which may further constrain global energy markets.
