Media: Khaled Mashal named new Hamas leader after Sinwar’s death
Khaled Mashal, the head of Hamas's office outside Palestine, has assumed the role of acting leader of the movement following the death of Yahya Sinwar.
He will now oversee all communications with key parties involved in ongoing negotiations and matters concerning prisoners, Caliber.Az reports per LBCI.
The same sources also revealed that Hamas has notified officials from Türkiye, Qatar, and Egypt about the death of its political bureau chief, Yahya Sinwar, during the recent operation in Tel al-Sultan.
Hamas indicated that Sinwar's assassination complicates negotiations for prisoner exchanges and efforts to halt the ongoing conflict.
Furthermore, discussions regarding the implications of Sinwar's assassination on negotiations and the possibility of a ceasefire were held between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani.
Notably, Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas was killed by Israeli military forces on October 17.
In the wake of his death, numerous Western leaders have expressed optimism that this development may mark a turning point in the war in Gaza and could pave the way for the release of over 100 hostages currently held by Hamas.
According to data from the enclave's Health Ministry, since the start of military operations in Gaza, the death toll among Palestinians has surpassed 42,000, while nearly all of the 2.2 million residents of the territory have been displaced, resulting in a deepening humanitarian crisis.
