Media: Macron set to decline Trump’s invitation to join Board of Peace for Gaza

20 January 2026 09:02

French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to turn down an invitation from US President Donald Trump to join a proposed “Board of Peace,” a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

The Trump administration has reportedly asked countries seeking a permanent seat on the body to commit at least $1 billion. Under a draft charter seen by Bloomberg, Trump would act as the inaugural chair of the board and retain authority over decisions related to membership.

The proposal has sparked concern among critics, who fear Trump is attempting to create an alternative or rival structure to the United Nations, an institution he has repeatedly criticised.

Macron believes the scope of the charter extends well beyond Gaza and raises serious issues, particularly regarding respect for the principles and institutional framework of the United Nations, which France views as non-negotiable, the source said.

Trump has invited several world leaders, including Argentine President Javier Milei and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, to participate in a Gaza-focused Board of Peace that would operate under the broader framework of his newly proposed Board of Peace.

A number of European countries have also been invited, according to people familiar with the discussions.

Trump is seeking to have the full constitution and mandate of the body formally signed in Davos on January 22, sources said. However, aspects of the detailed provisions have led some invitees to question whether they should take part.

The initiative is based on the Comprehensive Plan for Ending the Gaza Conflict, unveiled in September 2025. It has since received international recognition and was endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 2803 on November 17, 2025.

The proposed council aims to bring together countries willing to assume responsibility for long-term stability and peaceful development in the region, serving as a central platform to monitor commitments and mobilise resources for post-conflict reconstruction.
