Media: NATO chief’s aide set to become Germany’s ambassador to Ukraine

29 April 2026 14:36

The German government is set to approve the appointment of diplomat Boris Ruge as the new ambassador to Ukraine on April 29, Der Spiegel reports.

According to the publication, the cabinet decision is largely formal. Ruge currently serves as Assistant Secretary General of NATO for Political Affairs and Security Policy.

In this role, he oversees key areas of Alliance activity, including partnerships, enlargement, Russia policy, and arms control.

Prior to his work in Brussels, the 64-year-old diplomat served as deputy chairman of the Munich Security Conference, worked at the German embassy in Washington, and held the position of German ambassador to Riyadh.

Ruge began his diplomatic career in 1989 and has spent much of it focusing on security and stabilisation issues. In particular, he worked at NATO headquarters during the Kosovo operation, later served as a political adviser to the Alliance forces command in the region, and headed the political department in the Office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
