Media: NATO official says troop deployment to Ukraine not on current agenda

23 August 2025 14:13

NATO is not currently discussing the deployment of military contingents to Ukraine as a security guarantee, the alliance’s top military official said.

In an interview with Corriere della Sera, NATO Military Committee Chairman Giuseppe Cavo Dragone explained that the issue has not been raised within NATO and remains a political matter in negotiations with Moscow, Caliber.Az report.

He noted that while some individual countries have touched on the topic, it is still in its early stages.

Dragone emphasised that security guarantees, which are defined by politicians, need to be carefully contextualised. He highlighted unresolved questions, including who would decide if agreements were violated, who would develop the mission framework, which territories should be monitored, and whether military forces would only observe or also provide protection—and with what weapons.

He also said it was unclear whether any troops are ready or whether forces from non-NATO countries might be considered.

He stressed that NATO’s primary focus remains the protection of its member states’ citizens, while reaffirming the alliance’s full commitment to supporting Kyiv
