Media: New AI tools linked to target selection in US and Israeli strikes

07 March 2026 12:13

Artificial intelligence has reportedly been used for the first time in combat operations during the latest conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, helping analyse intelligence data and assist in selecting military targets. However, the use of such technology in warfare continues to generate debate.

According to experts cited in the report by ABC News, artificial intelligence systems may have helped identify targets for thousands of strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran since Feb. 28. At the same time, specific cases confirming the technology’s direct use in these operations have not yet been independently verified.

“Today, all major military powers are investing huge amounts in the military use of artificial intelligence,” said Laura de Roussi-Rochgonde of the French Institute of International Relations.

“AI can be used for almost any military task — from logistics to intelligence, surveillance, information warfare, electronic warfare and cybersecurity,” she added.

Artificial intelligence tools are also increasingly being integrated into semi-autonomous strike drones and other types of weapons systems.

One of the most widely discussed military applications of AI is its ability to shorten the so-called “kill chain,” the process and time required between identifying a target and carrying out a strike.

The United States Armed Forces are currently using the Maven Smart System, developed by Palantir Technologies, which its creators say can identify potential targets and prioritize them.

Earlier this week, The Washington Post reported that the generative artificial intelligence model Claude (AI model), created by Anthropic, had been integrated with Maven to expand the system’s capabilities for target detection and operational modeling.
