Media: Nordic energy grid on high alert after foreign-linked threat
Authorities across the Nordic region have raised preparedness levels following reports of a serious threat to the region’s energy infrastructure, Swedish broadcaster TV4 reports.
According to the broadcaster, an actor with links to a foreign power has issued a warning covering all Nordic countries, signaling that an attack could occur in the near future. The threat has been described as concrete, though the method or exact target remains unclear.
Sweden’s National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA) confirmed that it has urged energy sector operators to increase vigilance.
“It is correct that we have urged the energy sector to increased vigilance in Sweden,” said Ola Billger, FRA head of communications. “We did that at the end of last week through the National Cyber Security Centre.” He added that the alert follows cyberattacks on Poland’s energy sector in late December 2025.
“The background is that Poland was subjected to attacks in its energy sector at the end of December. We assess that there is reason to be attentive in a Swedish context as well,” Billger said. Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk attributed the attacks to Russian influence, according to Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. Information from Poland was shared with Nordic authorities, prompting Sweden’s heightened measures.
TV4 reported that several authorities and police units across Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland have entered a state of alert. Swedish police officers have been ordered to guard energy-related facilities, and FRA has advised reviewing Poland’s incident report and strengthening monitoring and system restoration capabilities.
In Finland, key agencies, including the Security and Intelligence Service and the national grid operator Fingrid, declined immediate comment.
The broadcaster noted that Swedish authorities are participating in a joint international response led by FRA, which operates under the Ministry of Defence and handles signals intelligence.
