Media: Over 60 bodies of African migrants found after US strike on Yemen Photo

28 April 2025 13:07

As many as 68 bodies have been discovered in Yemen, and 47 others injured, following a US airstrike on Saada that hit a detention centre housing African migrants.

The strike targeted a facility where 115 African migrants were being held, Caliber.Az reports per Al Masirah.

The Ministry of the Interior in Yemen confirmed that the centre was housing these individuals at the time of the attack.

The incident has raised further concerns regarding the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen, as the US's military actions continue to impact vulnerable populations in the region.

Note that the US military has not yet commented on recent airstrikes in Yemen, which followed a US Central Command announcement of over 800 targets hit since US President Donald Trump ordered intensified strikes against Houthi rebels in mid-March. The US strikes reportedly killed hundreds of fighters, including senior Houthi officials overseeing missile and drone programmes.

The Houthi-run government claims dozens of civilians were killed in the strikes, with few casualties reported among rebel fighters. A migrant detention centre in Saada, reportedly holding 115 African migrants, was hit on Sunday night.

Despite Yemen’s ongoing humanitarian crisis, migrants continue arriving by boat from the Horn of Africa, often with the intention of crossing into Saudi Arabia. Many face exploitation, violence, and dangerous journeys through conflict zones, according to the International Organization of Migration (IOM).

Earlier this month, the Houthis condemned US airstrikes on the Ras Isa oil terminal, claiming the attack killed at least 74 people and wounded 171. Centcom countered, stating the strike crippled Houthi fuel operations and revenue generation.
