Media: Protesters in Nepal attack foreign minister, former PM
Former Nepalese Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, the country’s serving Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, were reportedly assaulted during mass protests.
According to India Today, both politicians sustained injuries after being attacked by demonstrators.
Protesters also set fire to a private school owned by the Foreign Minister, the report added.
The protests come amid widespread public discontent, although authorities have not yet released detailed statements on the incident.
To recall, Nepal has lifted its ban on 26 social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube, after nationwide protests against corruption turned deadly, leaving at least 19 people dead and over 500 injured.
The demonstrations were sparked by the "nepo kid" campaign, highlighting politicians’ children's lavish lifestyles and alleged corruption. The government had initially blocked the platforms for failing to register with Nepal's communications ministry, citing concerns over fake news and online fraud.
Thousands of young protesters stormed parliament in Kathmandu on 8 September, with some clashing violently with police and attacking Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s residence. Several districts remain under curfew.
Prime Minister Oli expressed sorrow over the casualties and blamed "vested interest groups," promising an investigation and financial aid for victims’ families. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned following criticism of the police response.
The ban was lifted after an emergency meeting to “address the demands of Gen Z.”
