Media: Romania’s president launches talks to form new government

06 May 2026 12:52

Romania’s President Nicușor Dan is set to begin consultations with parliamentary parties on May 6 to explore the formation of a new government, following the collapse of the previous cabinet led by Ilie Bolojan.

The president will hold separate meetings with leaders of the main political forces that had been part of the former ruling coalition. The discussions aim to clarify party positions on Romania’s political direction and assess their willingness to participate in a new governing arrangement, Digi24 reports.

Invitations have been extended to representatives of the Social Democratic Party, National Liberal Party, Union for the Salvation of Romania, and the Hungarian minority party.

However, forming a stable parliamentary majority remains uncertain. Reports indicate persistent disagreements among major parties over key policy issues and the terms of any prospective coalition.

Romania entered a political crisis after the ruling coalition fractured, with the Social Democrats withdrawing support for the prime minister. This led to a successful no-confidence vote in parliament, where 281 lawmakers backed the motion, surpassing the required threshold of 233 votes. Four legislators voted against, while three ballots were declared invalid.

The situation was further complicated by Bolojan and his party shifting into opposition ahead of the vote, deepening the political deadlock in Romania.
