Media: Spanish PM Sánchez to visit China amid EU’s trade strategy review
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is set to travel to China next month for talks with President Xi Jinping.
The visit, which will also include a stop in Vietnam, comes at a pivotal time as the European Union reconsiders its global trade strategy following the disruptions caused by US President Donald Trump’s trade war, Caliber.Az reports per Bloomberg.
Sánchez’s trip to China is significant, marking the 20th anniversary of a partnership agreement between the two nations. During his last visit to Beijing in 2023, Sánchez broke away from the EU’s collective stance, calling for a reassessment of proposed tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles.
Despite his opposition, the EU went ahead with the tariffs, which are intended to protect European manufacturers from the competitive pressure of Chinese state-subsidised exports.
In Vietnam, the Spanish government will seek to explore fresh market opportunities to strengthen its economic ties in Southeast Asia.
