Media: Telegram's chief cooperates with French authorities
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov is cooperating with the French judicial authorities and is fully observing the conditions of control imposed after he was charged.
“This is entirely in line with the cooperation with the judicial authorities at present,” Prosecutor of Paris, Lor Beko said, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The prosecutor highlighted that the choice to investigate Durov personally stemmed from Telegram’s failure to respond to requests from French investigators. It also aimed to show that "even in a seemingly virtual world, organised crime is evolving."
She also highlighted that this is why a law was established in France to hold individuals accountable for administering internet platforms used for illegal activities.
Durov enjoyed a high-profile presence in France, frequently mingling with the nation's business and political elite. His visits, often staying at Paris’ luxury hotels and socializing with influential figures, reflected his deepening ties with the country.
However, this relationship took a dramatic turn last month when Durov, a French-Emirati citizen, was arrested upon arriving at Paris-Le Bourget airport. He now faces a formal investigation over alleged involvement in criminal activities facilitated through Telegram, including drug trafficking and the distribution of child sexual abuse material.
Durov expressed surprise at being targeted for the misuse of his platform by others, emphasizing his previous cooperation with French authorities, including aiding in the establishment of a counter-terrorism hotline. His arrest has ignited a global debate on free speech versus online safety and strained diplomatic relations.
Initially, French authorities had warmly embraced Durov, especially after 2017 when President Emmanuel Macron's administration sought to boost France as a hub for tech investment. In 2018, Durov was granted French citizenship under special status, joining a select group of entrepreneurs and celebrities.
