Media: Thailand promises calm amid cross-border incident with Cambodia

Thailand’s military has pledged to take necessary measures to prevent escalation along the border with Cambodia following reports of a mortar attack allegedly carried out by Cambodian forces.

The announcement came from Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army, General Pana Klaewblaudtuk, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

He said the units that came under fire have already been given instructions on handling the situation and stressed that further conflict escalation is unnecessary.

An investigation into the incident is underway within the Thai military. Preliminary reports indicate that a grenade launcher was fired from Cambodian territory roughly 100 metres from Thailand’s Si Sa Ket province. Authorities in Bangkok suggested the incident may have been caused by lapses in discipline within the Cambodian armed forces.

Bangkok sources said the attack occurred at 8:50 a.m. local time. Thai forces responded with warning shots. No casualties have been reported.

Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to brief the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva on the incident.

Cambodia’s Information Minister Pheaktra Neth told Western media that the ceasefire had not been violated. “These statements are absolutely false; they were fabricated and grossly distort the facts, deliberately seeking to mislead public opinion and provoke tensions along the border,” he said.

The territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia spans more than a century, arising from unclear borders in several remote regions. In July 2025, clashes along the border lasted five days, resuming in December. Mediation by the United States, China, and Malaysia eventually helped both sides reach a ceasefire.

The Thai military emphasized that it aims to maintain calm and avoid unnecessary escalation while closely monitoring the border situation.
