Media: Trump open to mending fences with Musk

11 June 2025 16:02

US President Donald Trump said he could reconcile with Elon Musk, though rebuilding their relationship isn’t a priority for him at the moment.

Trump expressed no hard feelings toward Musk despite their recent public fallout, but admitted feeling “a little disappointed”, Caliber.Az reports via New York Post.

“I was really surprised that that happened. He went after a bill that’s phenomenal… He just — I think he feels very badly that he said that, actually,” Trump said.

The tension between the two arose after Musk criticised the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” which the Congressional Budget Office estimates will add $3 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. Musk had been leading the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) effort to reduce government spending and address the soaring national debt, which now nears $37 trillion.

Last week, Musk accused Trump of showing “such ingratitude” and claimed the president would not have won the 2024 election without his help.

Just days before, Trump had hosted a cordial Oval Office farewell for Musk as his special government role ended, praising him and joking Musk was “not really leaving.” When asked about repairing their relationship, Trump said, “I guess I could, but we have to straighten out the country. And my sole function now is getting this country back to a level higher than it’s ever been.”

Trump had earlier suggested Musk “lost his mind” and even contemplated cutting federal contracts to his companies. Responding to speculation about Musk’s behavior, Trump said, “I don’t know what his problem is, really.”
