Media: Trump tasks Saudi crown prince to coordinate US-Iran dialogue

25 November 2025 17:16

US President Donald Trump has instructed Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to act as a mediator in contacts between the US and Iran, including discussions on Iran’s nuclear program and international sanctions.

Prince Salman told Trump that reaching an agreement with Iran is necessary to ensure stability in the Middle East, Al Akhbar reports, citing sources.

He also expressed concern that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu might attempt to derail the negotiation process by initiating a new round of military conflict with Iran.

Following the prince’s return from the US, Saudi officials reportedly contacted Iran, proposing high-level Iranian-Saudi talks in Paris within 24 hours, to be followed by Saudi shuttle diplomacy on the US-Iran track.

Sources said that during a September meeting in Riyadh, Prince Salman discussed the possibility of Saudi mediation with Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Larijani reportedly responded positively but emphasised that Iran would not make concessions, particularly after the Israel-US military actions against the country in June of last year.

This comes at a time when discussions in Tehran are renewing over the future of the Iranian nuclear file and the possibility of Western countries referring it to the UN Security Council, following Iran’s decision to suspend its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) agreement.

In 2025, Iran and the US restarted indirect nuclear talks in Muscat, Oman, mediated by Omani officials.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has voiced his willingness to help broker a deal, stating that Riyadh will do its best to reach a deal between America and Iran.

At the same time, Iran’s leadership has emphasised that any diplomatic agreement must guarantee its nuclear rights, rejecting outright concessions.
