Media: Trump to host Latin American leaders in Miami on March 7

12 February 2026 10:16

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to host a summit with the leaders of several Latin American countries at his residence in Miami, Florida, on March 7, according to a White House representative who spoke to AFP.

The official did not disclose specific details about the event. However, the meeting is expected to bring together the presidents of Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Honduras — countries whose leaders maintain strong personal ties with Trump.

The summit is reportedly intended to address efforts to counter China’s expanding influence across Latin America. Washington has increasingly emphasised geopolitical competition in the Western Hemisphere, and the upcoming gathering is expected to reinforce alignment with regional partners.

The meeting will take place two months after a major U.S. military and law-enforcement operation in Venezuela. On January 3, 2026, the United States launched a large-scale operation code-named Operation Absolute Resolve. The mission involved coordinated military strikes, the deployment of special forces, and the disabling of Venezuelan air-defence systems in and around Caracas.

During a predawn raid, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were taken into custody. U.S. officials stated that both were subsequently transported to the United States to face federal charges, including drug trafficking and narco-terrorism.

President Trump announced the success of the operation, describing it as a necessary measure to confront alleged criminal activity. He also declared that the United States would oversee a political transition process in Venezuela and suggested that American oil companies could participate in restoring and repairing the country’s energy infrastructure.

The operation resulted in violence. Pentagon officials confirmed that several U.S. personnel were injured, though none were killed. Independent reporting indicated that Venezuelan and allied forces suffered casualties numbering in the dozens.

International reaction to the intervention was sharply divided. The United Nations and several global leaders expressed serious concerns regarding the legality of the incursion and its implications for regional stability, arguing that it may constitute a violation of international law and Venezuelan sovereignty.

Maduro has pleaded not guilty in a federal court in Manhattan. He has rejected U.S. jurisdiction over the case and continues to assert that he remains the legitimate president of Venezuela.
