Media: Trump weighs support for armed Iranian opposition
US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering backing armed groups inside Iran seeking to overthrow the ruling regime, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing US officials familiar with the discussions.
According to the report, Trump recently held a call with Kurdish leaders and has continued outreach to other regional actors who might attempt to exploit what US officials describe as Tehran’s vulnerability. Kurdish forces maintain a significant presence along the Iraq-Iran border.
“The President continues to engage with local leaders who could take advantage of Tehran’s weakness to achieve their objectives,” sources said.
The report notes that recent Israeli strikes in western Iran have fueled speculation that changing battlefield dynamics could create opportunities for local advances by opposition groups, potentially reshaping the security landscape in the region.
