Media: Ukrainian flag removed from Czech government building Now EU flag is flying

07 January 2026 16:01

The Ukrainian flag has been removed from the façade of the Czech government building and replaced with the European Union flag, according to Czech news portal Idnes.

The removal comes following the formation of a new governing coalition that includes the ANO movement, SPD, and the Motoristé sobě party.

The Ukrainian flag was also taken down from the lower house of parliament after the election of its new speaker, SPD leader Tomio Okamura. A similar order was later issued by ANO Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar. As a result, the flag, which had flown in front of the government building since February 24, 2022, is no longer displayed.

The changes became noticeable earlier in the week when a black flag was temporarily raised on the flagpole. Officials clarified that the black flag was not in reference to international events, but rather as a sign of mourning for a government employee. The Ukrainian flag was not restored afterwards.
