Media: US envoy arrives in Israel ahead of Edan Alexander’s expected release
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has arrived in Israel ahead of the anticipated release of Idan Alexander, a dual Israeli-American national held hostage in the Gaza Strip.
Witkoff is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as part of Washington’s ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas, Caliber.Az reports via Ynet.
Alexander, who holds both Israeli and US citizenship, has been held captive in Gaza. According to sources familiar with the matter, Witkoff intends to meet with Alexander and his family once he is freed.
It was earlier reported that Hamas is expected to release Idan Alexander, an Israeli-American soldier captured in October 2023, as early as May 12 or 13. The handover to the Red Cross will take place without ceremony and will depend on security conditions.
The group has urged Israel to suspend military operations in Gaza during the release, warning it will not proceed without guaranteed safe passage.
Alexander’s release is said to be part of broader efforts to reach a ceasefire, reopen border crossings, and boost humanitarian access. Hamas also confirmed recent “positive” discussions with the US and expressed willingness to begin immediate negotiations toward a final ceasefire, prisoner exchange, and new governance framework for Gaza.
