Media: US-guarded commercial ships face Iran’s assault in Strait of Hormuz

Two US commercial ships that crossed the Strait of Hormuz on May 4 had US military security teams aboard as Iran launched attacks against them during the transit, American officials said.

According to the Pentagon, Iran launched missiles, drones, and armed small boats against both vessels, but the US military intercepted the attacks and blew up the small boats, NBC News reports.

This marks the first known case of US troops being deployed directly on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Pentagon described the US military’s actions as “prudent security measure.”
