Media: US-Israel talks to focus on controversial Gaza deportation plan

12 September 2025 16:41

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to visit Israel next week, where he is expected to engage in high-level discussions concerning a contentious plan to deport Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to third countries.

Israeli security officials have reportedly presented Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a proposal to relocate Palestinians from the embattled Gaza enclave under the guise of “voluntary migration,” utilizing both air and maritime routes. The plan aims to address the humanitarian and security challenges posed by the ongoing conflict in Gaza but has sparked significant controversy and skepticism, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Despite the proposal reportedly having the backing of US President Donald Trump, sources indicate that Netanyahu’s cabinet remains highly doubtful about the plan’s practical feasibility and its potential diplomatic repercussions. Notably, no agreements have yet been reached with any foreign governments to accept Palestinian refugees, raising serious questions about the plan’s implementation.

Israeli authorities intend to commence the deportation process as early as next month, framing the move as a voluntary exodus. However, international observers and human rights advocates have voiced concerns over the legality and ethical implications of forcibly displacing civilians under any pretext.

During his visit, Rubio is expected to meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu and other senior Israeli officials, with the Gaza deportation proposal anticipated to dominate discussions. The talks will likely focus on the logistics, political viability, and international response to the plan amid a volatile regional context.
