Mediators push to extend US–Iran truce amid key disputes

Mediators’ efforts to extend a ceasefire between the United States and Iran have made progress, with the warring sides expected to return soon to the negotiating table for another round of talks, regional officials said, AP reports.

The officials said mediators are seeking to extend the ceasefire, which is due to expire on April 22, for at least another two weeks in order to give diplomacy additional time. They added that both sides have given an “in principle agreement” to extend the truce.

One of the officials, who is involved in the mediation efforts, said negotiators were working on a compromise covering three main disputed issues: the nuclear program, the Strait of Hormuz, and war compensation.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the ongoing discussions.
