Medieval treasure trove found in Netherlands
13 March 2023 03:30
A medieval hoard consisting of gold jewelry and silver coins has been found in the Netherlands.
The find’s age is estimated at 1,000 years, Art News reports with reference to the Dutch National Museum of Antiquities.
The treasure was found by historian Lorenzo Ruyterom, who discovered the treasure with the help of a metal detector in the small town of Hogwood back in 2021. The find was kept secret while museum experts examined the artifacts.
Among the items found were four gold earrings, two strips of gold leaf, and 39 silver coins.
One of the coins dates back to 1250. According to scientists, that's when the items were buried. However, by this time the jewelry was already at least 200 years old.
The Museum notes that to find in the Netherlands medieval jewelry made of gold is a great rarity.
Why artifacts were buried, it was not possible to find out yet. However, in the middle of the XIII century Hogwood was in the epicenter of the armed confrontation between West Friesland and Holland.
The find belongs to Ruiter, but will be exhibited at the Museum of Antiquities.
