Meloni proposes to Trump: Let's make the West great again

18 April 2025 10:54

During her recent visit to Washington, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had a notable meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, where she proposed strengthening Western civilisation.

In a post shared on her social media platform X, cited by foreign media, Meloni stated, “For me, the West is not just a geographical space, it is a civilisation, and I want to make this civilisation stronger. My goal is to make the West great again, and I think together we can do it.”

Trump, acknowledging the sentiment, agreed with Meloni, responding that it was indeed possible to achieve that goal.

The conversation also led to a significant diplomatic gesture, as Meloni announced that Trump had accepted her invitation to visit Rome. During that visit, there is the possibility of holding a summit between the United States and the European Union, further strengthening transatlantic ties.

From the moment she arrived at the White House, Meloni was warmly welcomed by Trump, who praised her leadership. He referred to her as a “great prime minister” and noted that she had “taken Europe by storm.” The anticipation surrounding Meloni's visit to Washington was high, especially following months of trade tensions between the U.S. and the European Union. As someone familiar with both sides, Meloni was seen as a potential bridge to ease those strains.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump showered Meloni with praise, and she seemed to align with his perspective on various issues. Though no trade agreements were announced during the meeting, both leaders expressed optimism for the future.

Following her Washington trip, Meloni will continue her talks in Italy with U.S. Vice President JD Vance on April 18. Their discussions are expected to cover topics such as tariffs, defence spending, and the broader agenda of making the West stronger.

Later in the day, Vance will be joined by Italy’s two deputy prime ministers—Matteo Salvini of the League and Antonio Tajani of Forza Italia. This meeting marks Vance’s first visit to Europe since he delivered a critical speech at the Munich Security Conference in February, which had drawn attention for its sharp ideological commentary on European leadership.
