MEP: Brussels to do "everything it can" to oust Orbán in upcoming Hungary elections
The upcoming elections in Hungary represent the biggest challenge for the European Union, and Brussels will do everything possible to remove Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Luxembourg MEP Fernand Kartheiser told TASS in an interview.
“The greatest challenge for the EU right now is undoubtedly the upcoming elections in Hungary,” he said.
“Brussels will do everything it can to get rid of Viktor Orban, who is unquestionably the main obstacle to implementing its agenda.”
Kartheiser said the EU is expected to actively intervene in Hungary's internal affairs, increase the number of visits by politicians from other member states in support of the opposition, attempt to “accuse Russia or China of ‘interference’ in order to censor social media, and so on.”
“In these elections, Viktor Orbán will be fighting not only for his vision of Hungary, but also for the protection of democratic values throughout the European Union,” the MEP concluded.
Parliamentary elections in Hungary, which will result in the formation of a new government, are scheduled for April 12. Orbán's Fidesz-Hungarian Civic Union party and its junior partners, the Christian Democrats, are battling the opposition Tisa party. Its leader is former government official Péter Magyar, who enjoys the support of the European Union leadership and the largest faction in the European Parliament, the European People's Party.
