Merz welcomes Trump signals on potential halt of strikes against Iran
19 March 2026 16:53
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed gratitude toward Donald Trump for indications that military actions against Iran could be winding down, Al Jazeera reports.
“I am expressly grateful that the US president sent a signal in this regard last night that he is prepared to bring the fighting to an end,” Merz said to reporters ahead of an EU summit in Brussels.
He also noted that Europe stands ready to assist in stabilising the Middle East once hostilities cease.
His remarks followed Trump’s post on Truth Social, stating that Israel had “violently lashed out” in its strike on Iran’s South Pars field without US knowledge, and that Israel would refrain from further attacks on the site.
