Merz: Europe cannot project diplomatic power without military backing

29 April 2026 18:49

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that Europe’s diplomatic power only becomes effective when it is supported by military capabilities, in an interview with Der Spiegel.

Merz emphasised that one of his key objectives is to strengthen European unity, which, he argued, must be supported by military capabilities. Chancellor also said he is encouraging France to engage in discussions on Europe’s future security framework.

In addition, he noted that transatlantic relations are undergoing significant change as both the United States and Europe increasingly focus on their own priorities.

Responding to a question about the impact of US President Donald Trump on relations across the Atlantic, Merz said the process of mutual distancing had been building for years. According to him, Washington is seeking to reduce its level of involvement in guaranteeing European security, while Europe is simultaneously trying to reduce its dependence on the United States.

“The truth is that transatlantic relations have not been what I used to know for many years. There is mutual alienation, as well as a desire on the American side no longer to be unconditionally ready to ensure Europe’s security. And conversely, in Europe there is a desire no longer to be completely dependent on the United States,” the chancellor stated.
