Merz to visit White House for talks with Trump on trade, security

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will travel to Washington next week at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump for talks at the White House, marking his third visit there as chancellor.

A German government spokesperson confirmed in Berlin that Merz and Trump will meet for the second time on March 3. According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Sebastian Hille, the two leaders are scheduled to hold discussions in the Oval Office in the morning, followed by a working lunch, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media. 

Key topics on the agenda include bilateral relations, the international security situation, and trade and competition issues.

Trade tensions are expected to feature prominently in the talks. A major point of friction between the European Union and the United States has been Trump’s tariff policy, as well as uncertainty following a recent Supreme Court ruling. The court struck down the president’s use of emergency powers legislation as the legal basis for tariffs imposed on nearly all U.S. trading partners.

Merz said last weekend that he intends to present a “coordinated European position” during his discussions with Trump in light of the ruling.
