Mexico’s Sheinbaum to attend World Cup final at Trump’s invitation

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will travel to the World Cup final in the United States after receiving a direct invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump, she told journalists on Friday, July 18.

Sheinbaum said the invitation came personally from Trump and confirmed that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose country is also co-hosting the tournament, is expected to attend.

The visit marks a notable appearance given that Sheinbaum declined to attend the tournament’s opening ceremony on June 11 in Mexico. On that occasion, she gave her ticket for the Azteca Stadium to an indigenous woman who is a dedicated football fan.

Her trip comes against the backdrop of strained relations between Mexico and the United States over trade and security issues. Sheinbaum has met Trump in person only once before, during the World Cup draw held in Washington in December.

Mexican media reported that Sheinbaum adjusted her schedule in the state of Quintana Roo to make the trip, allowing her to attend the final between Argentina and Spain in East Rutherford, near New York.

Several international leaders and dignitaries are expected at the match. Spain’s King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Crown Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía are set to attend to support their national team.

Argentina’s President Javier Milei, however, will not be present at the stadium, citing superstition. Such practices, known in Argentina as “cábalas,” are a common part of football culture, with fans often adhering to specific routines such as watching matches in the same location or wearing the same clothing.
