Millions in England and Wales receive emergency wildfire alert

Millions of people across England and Wales received an emergency alert on Friday, August 14, as the government warned the public to avoid activities that could trigger wildfires amid an exceptionally high fire risk.

Deputy Prime Minister Louise Haigh said the alert represented the most extensive use of the UK’s emergency alert system to date. At about 7 p.m., mobile phones emitted a siren-like sound accompanied by a warning that read: “There is a serious risk of wildfires nationally.”

The public has been urged not to light barbecues, campfires, fireworks or anything else that could start a fire while the wildfire risk remains high. People have also been advised to call 999 immediately if they spot a fire.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited Stourbridge in the West Midlands on Friday after a series of fires destroyed homes and left residents injured. He warned that Britain “is a tinderbox right now” and that the public was facing a “difficult weekend”.

Burnham also announced an immediate temporary national ban on the sale of disposable barbecues. The restriction will remain in effect for as long as the wildfire risk remains high.

The military has been deployed to assist overstretched emergency services in South Wales. About 100 personnel were sent to the area, with another 100 expected to arrive on Friday evening. They are helping distribute water and providing logistical support.

England and Wales have experienced a record number of wildfires this year. The total has already surpassed the 1,017 fires recorded in 2025, while fire services declared 11 major incidents during a 24-hour period beginning on Thursday.

Haigh said: “In response to the continued risk posed by wildfires, the government has taken the decision to issue an emergency alert to England and Wales.

“This is the most extensive use of the UK’s emergency alert system in response to an active incident, and reflects the seriousness with which the government is acting to safeguard people and property.

“During this period of extreme heat, we are asking people to take simple steps to limit the risk of further fires.

“By following the safety guidance, everyone can play their part in protecting local communities and supporting our frontline services who are working around the clock to keep people safe.

“The government will continue to provide every assistance to communities being impacted by these fires, including the deployment of 100 additional military personnel in major incident areas.”
