Mine blast injures Syrian military engineers in Raqqa

Three Syrian soldiers were injured when a mine exploded as they were working to clear it in the village of Al-Hurriya in the Tal Abyad area of northern Raqqa province.

The incident was reported by Syria’s official SANA news agency, citing the Media and Communications Administration at the Defence Ministry.

According to the administration, the three soldiers from the Military Engineering Administration sustained injuries “to varying degrees” while carrying out mine-clearance operations.

The incident occurred in Al-Hurriya village, in the Tal Abyad area of northeastern Syria. The Defense Ministry did not provide further details about the nature of the soldiers’ injuries or the origin of the mine.

Despite the end of Syria’s 14-year civil war, landmines, unexploded ordnance and other remnants of the conflict continue to pose a threat to civilians and military personnel across the country.

According to the latest data from the Landmine Monitor, at least 13,953 people were killed or injured by mines and explosive remnants of war in Syria between 1999 and 2024. The monitor noted that the actual toll may be higher due to difficulties in documenting incidents.
