Minister: Countries respect Azerbaijan’s contribution to global climate change
Azerbaijani Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev has said that the “green transition” is Azerbaijan’s national priority.
Babayev made these remarks at the COP29 first press conference, Caliber.Az reports.
“The countries have chosen Azerbaijan as the venue for COP29. This shows the international community’s trust in the policy being pursued by Azerbaijan under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev in the international arena, as well as respect for Azerbaijan’s contribution to solving the problem of global climate change,” he noted.
“We will constantly continue strengthening global solidarity in the fight against global climate change,” the minister noted.
“Unfortunately, Azerbaijan is experiencing global climate change, in particular, a sharp drop in the level of the Caspian Sea, river levels, their full flow, as well as desertification and land erosion,” Babayev added.
To recap, Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.
Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.
Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.
The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
