Minister: Germany considers role in securing Strait of Hormuz
Germany could consider deploying its armed forces to help secure the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said, while emphasising that Berlin does not intend to become involved in the ongoing war with Iran.
According to Der Spiegel, Pistorius indicated that any potential deployment would depend on diplomatic developments, particularly the achievement of a ceasefire.
“If we reach an agreement on a ceasefire, we will discuss any deployment of troops to ensure peace, in particular to guarantee freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.
At the same time, the minister made clear that Germany would not take part in the military campaign involving Israel and the United States against Iran. He stressed that prior consultations had already taken place and reiterated Berlin’s position.
“This is not Germany’s war,” Pistorius said, underscoring that the government does not want to be drawn into the conflict.
