Minister: Trump, Orbán to usher in golden age for Hungary-US ties

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó has said that Hungary views US President-elect Donald Trump as a political ally of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Szijjártó expressed hope that the US-Hungary relations would open new opportunities, ushering in a golden age of cooperation, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

He emphasised that Trump and Orbán are clearly political allies, sharing similar stances on global challenges and key political issues. Szijjártó also pointed out that relations between the US and Hungary had reached a historic low during President Biden's administration.  

He held US Ambassador to Budapest David Pressman, responsible for this downturn, accusing him of attempting to push Hungary toward war, gender extremism, and the migration policies of Brussels over the past three years.

The Hungarian minister expressed hope that, with Trump in office, a new ambassador would be appointed to Budapest, assisting to elevate cooperation between the two nations to a higher level. Earlier, Orbán stated that with Donald Trump taking office in the US, a new era would begin, and it would be time for the EU to establish relations with Moscow. 

"We have all the opportunities for this because our defence and economic cooperation is functioning well, and the leaders of the two countries will soon become political allies of each other," Szijjártó concluded, referring to Donald Trump's official inauguration as US president on January 20.

Orbán is considered a long-time ally of Trump in Europe. Last year, the Hungarian prime minister openly supported the Republican during his campaign and visited him several times at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Orbán was the first EU leader whom Trump invited there after his victory in the November election.
