Missing Russian businessman confirmed dead following DNA analysis in Cyprus
A DNA analysis has confirmed the death of former "Uralkali" (Russian potash fertiliser producer and exporter) chief executive Vladislav Baumgertner, whose body was recently found in Cyprus.
The remains were discovered on January 14 along a remote and rugged section of coastline between the villages of Pissouri and Avdimou. Forensic experts confirmed today that the body belongs to Baumgertner, who was 56 years old. He had been missing since January 7, when he disappeared from his home in Pissouri, prompting a week-long search.
The circumstances of his death remain unclear. Investigators are examining several potential scenarios, ranging from an accidental death to the possibility of a criminal offence.
Local police reported that Baumgertner was last seen leaving his residence in Limassol dressed in black shorts and a short-sleeved T-shirt. The final signal from his mobile phone was registered on January 7 near the village of Pissouri.
Baumgertner served as CEO of "Uralkali" from 2005 to 2011. He gained broader public attention in 2013 following his arrest in Belarus on allegations of abuse of power. After he was transferred to the Russian authorities, the case against him was closed due to the absence of evidence of a crime.
