Moldova braces for possible peak-hour power outages, president warns

07 August 2026 18:50

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has warned that electricity outages during peak consumption hours cannot be ruled out, despite the availability of 13,500 MWh of electricity for domestic needs.

She said the government is working daily to secure sufficient capacity to maintain a stable and uninterrupted electricity supply for consumers, Radio Moldova reports.

“If we save more energy during peak hours, we will be able to avoid these problems,” Sandu said, urging consumers to reduce electricity use when demand is at its highest.

The president noted that Moldova is not alone in facing pressure on its power system, saying similar challenges are being experienced by other European countries. She called on the public to use energy resources more efficiently.

Sandu also pointed to recent rainfall as a potentially positive development for the regional energy sector. Increased precipitation has raised water levels in rivers, which could help improve hydrological conditions and ease pressure on electricity supplies.
