Moldova eyes to deprive ex-presidents of state protection

22 December 2022 19:39

The Moldovan parliament has approved a bill in the first reading that envisages depriving ex-presidents and prime ministers of state protection.

Presently, ex-presidents have a lifetime right to state protection, former prime ministers and parliamentary speakers - for a year after leaving office, according to Interfax.

The bill which is being discussed envisages the abolition of the right of ex-presidents, prime ministers and parliamentary speakers to use the services of the State Guard Service after their resignation.

Thus, the bill was submitted to parliament by MP from the ruling PAS party, chairman of the parliamentary commission on national security, defence and public order Lilian Carp.

He stated that this decision "is aimed at reducing costs and increasing the efficiency of the use of public funds".

According to the bill, it is also proposed to correct some concepts of the law on state protection, as well as supplement it with new provisions aimed at improving the process of training the staff of the Service.

The document also envisages an increase in the number of deputy directors of the Service by one person.
