Moldova faces potential gas supply crisis

08 August 2024 18:25

Moldova's Minister of Energy, Victor Parlicov, is set to request the implementation of a high alert regime in the energy sector due to the increasing risk of gas supply interruptions from Russia.

This decision comes in light of reports from the Ukrainian gas transport operator about potential disruptions caused by military actions in Russia's Kursk region, where a key gas metering station is located, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

Parlicov stated that recent developments indicate possible risks to gas supplies, particularly impacting Moldova and Transnistria, as they rely on the gas flow from this strategically important metering station.

"We discussed the situation and decided to ask the commission for emergency situations to declare a high alert regime in the energy sector," he explained.

While he assured that there are currently no immediate plans for gas shutoffs, the high alert would enhance monitoring and allow for the development of response plans based on the evolving situation.

The gas supply route in question serves as the sole channel for Russian gas transit through Ukraine to several European nations and Moldova. In the previous year, Gazprom reported delivering approximately 14.9 billion cubic meters of gas through this pipeline, underscoring its critical importance to the region's energy security.
