Moldova not to compromise on self-defence against foreign threats

17 October 2022 15:00

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has said that Chisinau is ready to resort to protective measures in case of a possible encroachment on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the republic by the Russian Federation.

Earlier, the Minister of Defence of Moldova Anatoly Nosaty said that the country's air defense observed the flight of Russian missiles, which on Monday, October 10, hit critical infrastructure facilities on the territory of Ukraine, Gazeta.Ru reports.

In this regard, the Russian Ambassador to Chisinau, Oleg Vasnetsov, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova.

The country's authorities discussed the possibility of closing the airspace.

Sandu emphasized that the security of Moldovan citizens is a priority. From the first weeks of the Russian "special operation" in Ukraine, Moldova has been asking partners to help in strengthening of defence capabilities, the president said.

“I hope that we will not come to this, but if Russia risks infringing on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova, then we will take advantage of protection measures,” the Moldovan leader said.

She added that Chisinau is negotiating with partners to strengthen the defence sector, but is not yet ready to announce the details.
