Moldova officially withdraws from Commonwealth of Independent States
09 April 2026 17:29
President of Moldova Maia Sandu has signed decrees denouncing key agreements of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), according to foreign media.
Authorities stated that the decision aligns with Moldova’s European integration course, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that the principles of the CIS are no longer upheld
Since 2023, the country has gradually reviewed dozens of CIS agreements, terminating those that conflicted with national interests or hindered EU accession.
The move drew criticism from pro-Russian forces, with Communist Party representatives calling Moldova’s exit from the CIS a “tragedy for the economy” and a “betrayal” of citizens working in Russia.
