Moldova is aiming to begin negotiations for European Union accession in 2025, during Poland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union.
This announcement was made by Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gerasimova, following a meeting in Brussels with head of the Permanent Representation of Poland to the EU, Agnieszka Bartol, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
Gerasimova expressed gratitude to Poland for its continued support of Moldova’s European aspirations, underscoring the country’s strong commitment to integrating into the European family.
Poland will assume the presidency of the Council of the European Union on January 1, 2025, and discussions during the meeting focused on the potential for starting negotiations on the first cluster, particularly around core European values. Gerasimova also highlighted efforts to accelerate integration in key areas that would offer tangible benefits to Moldova’s citizens, an objective that was discussed in detail during the meeting.
Moldova applied for EU membership on March 3, 2022. In June 2022, both Moldova and Ukraine were granted candidate status for EU membership. On December 14, 2023, the EU Council decided to begin accession negotiations with Moldova. Since then, work has been underway to prepare for the negotiations, including a comprehensive screening of Moldovan legislation across 33 clusters.
