Moldovan authorities declare Belarusian diplomat "persona non grata"
An employee of the Belarusian embassy in Moldova has been declared persona non grata by the local authorities
This information was confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chișinău, Caliber.Az reports citing Moldovan media outlet TV8.
Government spokesman Daniel Vodă commented on the incident, withholding the name of the diplomat.
He neither confirmed nor denied whether the decision was connected to the detention of former Security and Intelligence Service officer Alexandru Balan, who is suspected of passing classified information to the Belarusian secret services.
“It is clear and obvious that such cases in no way contribute to the development of friendly relations,” Vodă urged.
As the article recalls, Balan was detained on September 9 in Romania. The anti-organised crime prosecution of Moldova, DIICOT announced that the suspect had been involved in the unauthorised transfer of classified information to Belarusian intelligence officers. According to the investigation, he met representatives of Belarusian intelligence in 2024 and 2025 in Budapest.
Authorities allege that Balan received instructions and was “paid for the services provided.”
