Moldovan government approves exit from CIS information cooperation pact

29 July 2026 16:19

The Moldovan government has approved the country's withdrawal from the 1992 Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Information, signed in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, during a cabinet meeting, TASS reports.

“Although the agreement is intended to promote the free exchange of information and the development of cooperation in the information sphere, some of the mechanisms it provides for could, under the current regional circumstances, be used for disinformation,” Culture Minister Dan Suruceanu, who presented the draft resolution, said in explaining the decision.

The withdrawal must still be approved by Moldova's parliament.

Earlier, Moldova withdrew from the CIS's founding agreements and began the process of denouncing other CIS treaties. The country's formal withdrawal from the bloc is scheduled to take effect in April 2027.

At the same time, Moldova has expressed its intention to remain a party to 17 CIS agreements.
