Moldovan parliament accuses Russia of polluting Dniester River after strike in Ukraine
The parliament of Moldova has adopted a resolution accusing Russia of causing environmental damage to the Dniester River following a military strike on Ukrainian infrastructure.
In a statement published on the legislature’s official website, lawmakers said that significant quantities of petroleum products had entered the river after a Russian strike on the Novodnestrovsk hydroelectric complex in Ukraine’s Chernivtsi region on March 7, Caliber.Az reports.
The Dniester River is a primary source of drinking water for Moldova.
According to the statement, the contamination poses serious risks to public health, including the possibility of acute poisoning and long-term carcinogenic effects. Officials warned that the environmental impact could have lasting consequences for the country’s population.
Members of parliament called on the international community to increase pressure on Russia to halt attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. They also reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The resolution further expressed gratitude to Romania and the European Union for their continued assistance to Moldova amid ongoing regional tensions.
