How did the monkey pox appear?
The virus first appeared in 1958 in a study of a monkey with smallpox-like symptoms. In 1970, it was first seen in a human in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Then, the number of cases spread to 11 African countries , albeit small.
Monkey pox evolved at an unexpected rate.
When the calendars showed 2003, the disease was first seen outside the African continent and in the United States. Although a total of 81 cases were reported, none of them resulted in death. The virus emerged in 2017, this time in Nigeria. Nearly 40 years after the last cases of monkeypox were seen, the country saw its largest number of cases.
How is the disease transmitted?
It is transmitted to humans mostly from wild animals such as rodents and primates. However, it can also be transmitted from person to person through skin lesions, bodily fluids, respiratory droplets and through the towels, bedding and clothes of infected people. Eating undercooked meat and animal products of infected animals is also a risk factor for the transmission of the disease. It is stated that it can also be transmitted from mother to fetus through the placenta.
