Most Hungarians expect warmer ties with Ukraine under Magyar leadership Poll finds
A majority of Hungarians anticipate an improvement in relations with Ukraine following a change in government leadership, according to a new survey by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). However, public willingness to support Kyiv more broadly remains limited.
The poll indicates that 64% of respondents believe the new government would improve relations with Ukraine within its first year in office, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Among supporters of the opposition Tisza Party, the figure rises to 74%, while 54% of voters for the ruling Fidesz share the same expectation.
The survey also suggests that many Hungarians expect Budapest to potentially endorse EU financial assistance to Ukraine and engage in more active political dialogue with Kyiv.
At the same time, scepticism remains strong regarding deeper engagement. A majority of respondents oppose Hungary unblocking Ukraine’s EU accession talks, as well as providing direct financial or military assistance from Budapest.
The online survey was conducted between April 17 and 27, 2026, covering 1,001 adult Hungarian citizens.
